PROPOSITION By Kim Covert | Photography by Scott Brammer A nne Giardini tells the story of a co-ed recreational hockey league in Vancouver, where the men made the plays and the women “acted as pylons,” as even the good female players had trouble keeping up with the stronger, faster men on their teams. And then the rules changed: women had to score half the goals. Suddenly, instead of skating around the women on their team, the men had to set them up to score — and the women became better players for it. Ms. Giardini, president of Weyerhaeuser Company Ltd., used the story at a CCCA professional development sem- inar titled Diversity in Action to underline the difference between diversity and inclusion. “Do you bend the rules to make room for diverse staff?” Giardini asked the seminar participants at the recent Canadian Legal Conference inVancouver.“Do you hire a lower skill set” in order to ensure you meet diversity tar- gets? “My answer is resoundingly yes.” 26 CCCA Canadian Corporate Counsel Association FALL 2012
